Jug Bay has an incredible Citizen Science legacy with some programs running continuously for 30 years and counting. Our annual Citizen Science Summit convenes research volunteers by theme to present research findings and thinktank on new questions to pose to the Sanctuary. The Summit is held each November and includes an expert Keynote Speaker related to each year's theme.
Our theme for our upcoming 2024 Summit is "Exploring Current Citizen-Led Herpetological Research at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary". Featured projects will include our Eastern Box Turtle Habitat & Population Study, Eastern Box Turtle Telemetry, Vernal Pool Monitoring, and Salamander Road Crossing Surveys. All on-site research accomplishments are achieved by our outstanding and dedicated volunteer community at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary.
We are thrilled to welcome Kerry Wixted as this years' Keynote Speaker for the Summit. She will deliver an opening address titled, "Shellebrating Herps and the People Who Steward Them". Join us for a keynote on celebrating reptiles and amphibians of Maryland. We’ll explore the rich diversity of herpetofauna in the region, uncovering the ecological roles they play and the pressing threats they face, including habitat loss, climate change, and illegal trade. This talk will also highlight the vital work of conservationists and community scientists whose passion and dedication are helping to safeguard these species for future generations. Learn how you, too, can contribute to the stewardship and protection of Maryland’s remarkable reptile and amphibian populations.
Kerry Wixted is a Maryland naturalist with over 15 years of experience working with our state’s wild flora and fauna. She has a MS from West Virginia University and a BS in Wildlife and Fisheries Management from Frostburg State University. She has previously worked for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and currently is with the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.
As part of the registration fee ($25 per person), attendees will enjoy a thematic keynote address, detailed presentations on the listed programs, coffee, snacks, and a full lunch. We hope to see you there!
