Join Park Rangers from the National Park Service and Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks for an engaging kayak paddle up the Patuxent River (about 1 mile) to learn about what made this waterway important to British and American forces during the War of 1812. Paddlers will learn about military tactics and movements on the river during the war and the implications of war in Southern Maryland. The total paddle will be about 2 miles. Ages 13 and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Fee $20 per person. The program will be cancelled if weather and river conditions do not allow for a safe paddle. Registration is required at https://apm.activecommunities.com/aarecparks/Home Activity Net #44371. For questions, call 410-222-8006 or email jugbay@aacounty.org
The Patuxent River is a relatively slow-moving river, but paddlers must be able to propel the canoe or kayak through the water. Participants must be able to:
• Independently participate in all activities while maintaining an appropriate and safe body position.
• Manage all personal care and personal mobility independently.
• Effectively communicate with leaders and other participants.
For your safety you are required to have plenty of water, sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses, closed toe shoes that can get wet and an extra set of dry clothes.
