In 2007, the old farmhouse on the northeast corner of the Parris N. Glendening Nature Preserve was renovated. The project was funded by our county and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) grant obtained because of our partnership with the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The house was remodeling largely by a team of volunteers, under the guidance of retired engineer, Harry "Mickey" Taylor. An addition was put on so that the building could serve as office space, a welcome center for the Preserve, a meeting place, and more. Updating an existing structure is usually more sustainable than demolition and new construction because of all the materials that end up in landfills.
