Herp Atlas Survey

Assist with the Maryland Amphibian and Reptile Atlas Survey, a 5-year project to map the distribution of all amphibians and reptiles within the state. The Natural History Society of Maryland (NHSM), in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD-DNR), plans to map the distribution of all herps within the state, using mostly volunteer help. The information gained from this effort, when compared to the historical record, will be used to determine population trends and assess the potential effects of future activities.

We have excellent knowledge of the amphibian and reptile species found on the Sanctuary, gained through extensive research conducted since 1986. However, new properties have been added, and we need to verify old information within the Atlas project window. We will conduct surveys (one or two a month, February through October) on various sections of the Sanctuary during the atlas period. Some nighttime forays and surveys will be conducted as scheduled, regardless of weather.

Participants in these surveys will learn about Herp Atlas procedures and search and identification techniques, which will enable them to expand their activities to other areas. Participation is limited to 10 people, aged 10 and older. They will be led by experienced, knowledgeable volunteers. Registration is required. Meet promptly at the Wetlands Center.
