Classrooms in the Field are custom-designed field experiences for students from kindergarten to college. Our outdoor programs are tailored to meet the needs of teachers and students alike, actively involving students in the learning process and introducing students to many facets of ecology and scientific research.
Programs take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, between 9 am and 2 pm, scheduled by advanced reservation only.
During a typical day, students are divided into groups that rotate between activities led by staff naturalists with assistance from teachers and chaperones. Teachers and students are encouraged to take advantage of the educational exhibits at the McCann Wetlands Center.
Classrooms in the Field require cooperation between staff naturalists and teachers. Prior to the trip, teachers are encouraged to prepare their students and integrate the field experiences into their curriculum. Teachers attend a planning session with staff naturalists to determine the specific content of the field trip.
We challenge each class to pack a No Trash Lunch, then weigh their trash when they come for a field trip. See how little trash the classes packed by checking our No Trash Lunch Challenge results from Spring 2010.
