Dr. Patricia Delgado, Superintendent / Wetland Ecologist

Main Duties

- Managing the Sanctuary
- Leading research and monitoring projects

Patricia has conducted wetland research for over 20 years and has never tired of learning about these magnificent places. She believes in the important role of science in supporting education, resource conservation, and management. In the Sanctuary, she is eager to promote environmental education, stewardship, research, citizen science, and science communication to the public, while also providing a protected environment for the public enjoyment. Patricia received a B.S. in Marine Biology from Universidad Nacional de Heredia (Costa Rica) and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Oceanography and Coastal Sciences from Louisiana State University. 

Liana Vitali, Naturalist & Education Coordinator

Main Duties

Coordinating, developing, and leading Sanctuary formal and public education programs

 Developing and/or assisting with Sanctuary research studies
Liana believes wholeheartedly in the power of science inquiry to not only discover the natural world but to also discover ourselves. Through inspiring and meaningful outdoor learning experiences, she believes you can never be too old or too young to find excitement in nature. Liana earned her BS in Biology & Ecology at Penn State University and her Master’s in Zoology through the Global Field Program of the Miami University of Ohio.

Heather Baden, Naturalist

Main Duties
- Coordinating, developing, and leading Sanctuary formal and public education programs
- Scheduling field trips and Classrooms in the Field (CITF)
- Coordinating the homeschool series

- Directing Summer Camp
Heather is an environmental educator eager to share the joys of nature with all ages.  She received her BS in Natural Resources Management from University of Maryland.

Melinda Fegler, Naturalist & Volunteer Coordinator

- Coordinating volunteer activities
- Coordinating stewardship projects

Melinda loves to share her passion for ecological research, restoration, citizen science and outdoor education. Melinda's own education comes from Texas A&M University with a BS in Marine Biology and a MS in Natural Resource Management.

Judy Burke, Office Manager & Naturalist

- Managing the office
- Orienting visitors and encouraging their interest in the plants, animals and ecosystems of Jug Bay
J
udy is a D.C. native whose childhood vacations went west to the granite mountaintops of the Shenandoahs; she discovered the amazements of tides and mud—spatterdock! painted turtles! green treefrogs! —as an adult.
She graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in history and received a master’s degree in wildlife biology from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, N.Y.

Kevin Carpenter, Chesapeake Conservation Corp Member

Main Duties
- Supporting existing and developing new education and stewardship programs
- Researching and testing natural resource management protocols

Kevin is a recent graduated of Christopher Newport University with a B.S. in Organismal Biology. He has a passion for conservation and restoration that he hopes to spread through environmental education. 

Richard Chaney, Maintenance
Richard lives near the Sanctuary and enjoys working in the out of doors, maintaining our tractors and other equipment, and keeping the grounds looking good. 

Donald Smith, Maintenance
Bristol resident Donald Smith is an active member of Soller’s Methodist Church which borders the Sanctuary. Donald is a carpenter and a pipe fitter, and for over twenty years he worked for the U.S. Navy at the Washington Navy Yard.
